Construction Questions and Answers |
|
Okay, I want to volunteer to work on a house.
What should I do?
Go to our on-line volunteer calendar and get signed up. We take
job-site volunteers Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday. We encourage
you to attend a volunteer orientation (Nuts & Bolts) before
volunteering on site (see below). For legal reasons, you must be at
least 16 years of age to work on the construction site.
What if I want to bring a group out with me?
You must call the Program Manager (Amy Guidry) to schedule a group
(no matter how small) so we can ensure that we use your time
productively. Putnam County Habitat for Humanity is fortunate to
have many groups willing to give of their time, so we must carefully
schedule them in order to make volunteering a safe and enjoyable
experience for all.
When and where should I show up?
You must be registered on-line before you can volunteer on-site.
Once you are registered, please arrive at the site at 8:15 a.m.
(7:30am in July & August) so you can be assigned to a crew and get a
safety briefing. We generally work until 3:00 p.m. (2pm July &
August), and ask that volunteers stay the full day. You will receive
directions to the site when you sign up for a specific workday.
What should I wear?
You should dress in comfortable work clothes that can get dirty.
Dress seasonably as we often work out of doors. Layered clothing, a
hat, and sunscreen are recommended. Open-toed shoes and sandals are
not allowed on site. Please wear sturdy shoes such as tennis shoes
or boots.
What sort of work will I be doing?
That depends on what needs to be done, the state of the houses under
construction, and to some extent, the weather. Be prepared for
anything, including framing, siding, roofing, drywall, painting,
cleaning, and landscaping.
How do we handle LUNCH?
We take a 30-minute break for lunch around noon. It is easiest to
bring a bag lunch. If lunch is going to be provided, it will be
noted on the sign-up calendar
What should I bring?
Just bring yourself and a lunch. Although you are free to bring your
own tools, Habitat provides all necessary tools. Please do not bring
valuables, as there is no secure place to store them.
What if I canšt tell which end of the hammer is
which?
Habitat welcomes those with construction skills, but we have a crew
of leaders on hand to train volunteers and answer questions. If you
are willing to try and learn, we will be able to use you.
When and where is the volunteer orientation/Nuts
& Bolts meeting?
New volunteer orientations (Nuts & Bolts) are held at our offices.
Check out our calendar for the schedule.
It is a great opportunity to learn more about PCHFH mission and
volunteer opportunities and meet other volunteers.
