Brenda Wilson Family

Brenda keeps busy raising her family, while working in the home health care industry and attending school to study Medical Office Administration. She moved her family to Cookeville in 2002 to start fresh and be closer to her family. Brenda and her children currently reside in her parent’s basement and cannot wait until they can call Algood home! Jeremy is a freshman at Tennessee Tech University studying psychology with future plans to study law. Jessica is a 9th grader at CHS where she keeps busy playing on the JV and Varsity soccer teams. Jennifer is an 8th grader at Avery Trace Middle School and enjoys playing soccer and helping others.

Build Location: 358 Second Avenue North in the heart of Algood.

Directions to job site:
Drive on into Algood and stay on West Main Street—which requires a sharp right turn after the Shell Station. Second Avenue North is located past the Post Office and Advanced Cleaning. Turn left and proceed. At the fork stay right, on Second Avenue. This is a narrow road and quiet neighborhood — please drive slowly!! The Habitat property is on the right at the end of the road and the Women Build house is the first site. To save space, consider carpooling!  Note: We have permission for our volunteers to park in the Trinity Assembly parking lot, the Rogers Group parking lot, and the Iglesia De Jesucristo church parking lot, which are located at the corner of 2nd Avenue North & Washington (just 0.5 miles from the jobsite).

Women Build Concept

Putnam County Habitat for Humanity is now conducting its second Women Build event. Women from Putnam County will help create a solution to the problem of poverty housing by building a Habitat home. The Women Build program empowers women to learn construction skills and positively impact lives by making homeownership a reality. Poverty is a severe threat to a child's health, growth and potential, yet over 12 million children are living in poverty. Women have the capability to be a part of the solution by participating in a Women Build event.

Women Build is not about excluding men. It's about including women and opening the door of opportunity. Construction is often a male-dominated field, and women may feel intimidated on a regular construction site to learn skills. As newly skilled volunteers are created, there will be an increase in the number of Habitat homes that can be completed.

Volunteers are now being recruited for the PCHFH Women Build program. Women of all ages, groups, and backgrounds are encouraged to volunteer their time, materials and finances to the Women Build home. Financial gifts and pledges are also being accepted. For more information about the Women Build event, call Putnam County Habitat for Humanity at 528-1711.

Women Build History

A group of women in Charlotte, N.C., completed the first women-built Habitat home in 1991, planting the first seeds for the Women Build program. In May of 1998, the Women Build department at Habitat for Humanity, International, was officially instituted. Since 1991, all-women crews have built more than 350 Habitat homes in the United States. Putnam County Habitat for Humanity built its first Women Build home in 2004.
